  • Book Description :

This Fourth Edition of the expanded version of Zill's best-selling A FIRST COURSE IN DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS WITH MODELING APPLICATIONS places an even greater emphasis on modeling and the use of technology in problem solving and now features more everyday applications. Both Zill texts are identical through the first nine chapters, but this version includes six additional chapters that provide in-depth coverage of boundary-value problem-solving and partial differential equations, subjects just introduced in the shorter text. Previous editions of these two texts have enjoyed such great success in part because the authors pique students' interest with special features and in-text aids. Pre-publication reviewers also praise the authors' accessible writing style and the text's organization, which makes it easy to teach from and easy for students to understand and use. Understandable, step-by-step solutions are provided for every example. And this edition makes an even greater effort to show students how the mathematical concepts have relevant, everyday applications.
Among the boundary-value related topics covered in this expanded text are: plane autonomous systems and stability; orthogonal functions; Fourier series; the Laplace transform; and elliptic, parabolic, and hyperparabolic partial differential equations, and their applications.

Without sacrificing scientific strictness, this introduction to the field guides readers through mathematical modeling, the theoretical treatment of the underlying physical laws and the construction and effective use of numerical procedures to describe the behavior of the dynamics of physical flow.
The book is carefully divided into three main parts:
- The design of mathematical models of physical fluid flow;
- A theoretical treatment of the equations representing the model, as Navier-Stokes, Euler, and boundary layer equations, models of turbulence, in order to gain qualitative as well as quantitative insights into the processes of flow events;
- The construction and effective use of numerical procedures in order to find quantitative descriptions of concrete physical or technical fluid flow situations.
Both students and experts wanting to control or predict the behavior of fluid flows by theoretical and computational fluid dynamics will benefit from this combination of all relevant aspects in one handy volume.

From Customer Reviews
An excellent introduction to tensor and matrix calculus, the best thing about this book is that ot makes very clear at the outset what is being discussed rather than the slew of books that start tossing indices around without so much as even attempting to provide a sensible definition of what exactly a tensor is. The book concentrates mainly on matrices, and tensors that can be represented by matrices. This is an unusual approach, as usually, only the indicial notation is used. That can be helpful, but if you don't understand what the indices mean, it can just be confusing. Since everything os written out in matric form, it makes the tensors seem to have much more comprehensibility, escpecially for someone new to the subject. This book was indispensible to me in moving from basic to advanced mathematics. The one oddity here is that it was intended, as the author states, mainly for marketing students and not for engineers. This is odd, as I can hardly imaginine most business students pluggin away at vector calculus, and there are no real marketing specific problems, but it was not intended for physics students. All the same, no real attention is paid to theory and the problems posed are all readily understandable to those who have done with multivariable calculus and linear algebra. I wish that this little book were easier to find; it woulf be a great help to confused engineers everywhere.

  • Book Description :

This book discusses a variety of problems which are usually treated in a second course on the theory of functions of one complex variable. It treats several topics in geometric function theory as well as potential theory in the plane. In particular it covers: conformal equivalence for simply connected regions, conformal equivalence for finitely connected regions, analytic covering maps, de Branges' proof of the Bieberbach conjecture, harmonic functions, Hardy spaces on the disk, potential theory in the plane. The level of the material is gauged for graduate students. Chapters XIII through XVII have the same prerequisites as the first volume of this text, GTM 11. For the remainder of the text it is assumed that the reader has a knowledge of integration theory and functional analysis. Definitions and theorems are stated clearly and precisely. Also contained in this book is an abundance of exercises of various degrees of difficulty.

  • Book Description :

The Handbook of Feynman Path Integrals appears just fifty years after Richard Feynman published his pioneering paper in 1948 entitled "Space-Time Approach to Non-Relativistic Quantum Mechanics", in which he introduced his new formulation of quantum mechanics in terms of path integrals. The book presents for the first time a comprehensive table of Feynman path integrals together with an extensive list of references; it will serve the reader as a thorough introduction to the theory of path integrals. As a reference book, it is unique in its scope and will be essential for many physicists, chemists and mathematicians working in different areas of research.
From Review
"The book is a compendious handbook for the path integral with a list of almost 1000 references.
...Such a handbook could not have been written up without persistent efforts over years to accumulate the basic data, and the authors may now be destined to keep incessantly supplementing it with further references. Anyway, this book will be useful to the reader who wants to know not only what the path integral is, but also which path integrals can in fact be calculated." Mathematical Reviews, 2000 "This volume provides a comprehensive account of the quantum mechanical path integrals that have been successfully evaluated during the fifty years since R. Feynman published his pioneering papers on the subject. ... This unique handbook will be an indispensable reference for physicists, quantum chemists and mathematicians working on the diverse areas of research where Feynman path integrals are used."

  • Book Description :

This is our account of the theory of finite soluble groups as it has developed during the past 30 years. We have concentrated on those parts of the subject where a coherent and unified body of knowledge has emerged: the theory of Schunck classes and formations with their associated subgroups, the projectors and normalizers; the dual theory of Fitting classes with their injectors and radicals. All this material can be viewed as one vast and splendid generalization of the subgroups of Sylow and Hall; indeed, to have engendered an expansion of knowledge of such cosmic proportions, Sylow's theorem might well be compared to the Big Bang. Historical introductions to these themes can be found at the beginning of Chapters III and VIII. We have made no attempt to treat what is generally known as Hall-Higman theory and its manifold applications; only a separate monograph could hope to do justice to that.

  • Book Description :

This book presents new achievements and results in the theory of conjugate duality for convex optimization problems. The perturbation approach for attaching a dual problem to a primal one makes the object of a preliminary chapter, where also an overview of the classical generalized interior point regularity conditions is given. A central role in the book is played by the formulation of generalized Moreau-Rockafellar formulae and closedness-type conditions, the latter constituting a new class of regularity conditions, in many situations with a wider applicability than the generalized interior point ones. The reader also receives deep insights into biconjugate calculus for convex functions, the relations between different existing strong duality notions, but also into several unconventional Fenchel duality topics. The final part of the book is consecrated to the applications of the convex duality theory in the field of monotone operators.

As dissatisfaction with the current status of school mathematics grows worldwide, educators and professionals alike are calling for reforms and instructional changes. Yet, significant changes can only be achieved if each educator of school mathematics personally rethinks various aspects of mathematics instruction, and identifies concrete ways in which their current practice could be modified. Before such visions can be meaningfully implemented in classrooms, it is important that mathematics teachers and educators examine critically both the assumptions and implications of the vision for school mathematics that the reports propose. This book is intended to support educators in such a challenging enterprise by focusing attention on "errors" and their use in mathematics instruction. Throughout the book, an approach to errors as opportunities for learning and inquiry will be developed and employed both as a means to create the kinds of instructional experiences advocated for school mathematics reform, and as a heuristic to invite reflections about school mathematics as well as mathematics as a discipline. From Customer Reviews
This book is excelent. Style is very practical, very readable. Not only formulas are derived, but also mathematical ideas behind are explained. The book is very result-oriented, i.e. after reading it you will know some math methods. Book requires just a minitial knowledge of math, (college level - integrals, partial derivatives), some knowledge of theory of probability, no prior knowledge of stochastic calculus, and no prior knowledge of finance. Good for a physicist learning finance.

In this book, thirteen promising young researchers write on what they take to be the right philosophical account of mathematics and discuss where the philosophy of mathematics ought to be going. New trends are revealed, such as an increasing attention to mathematical practice, a reassessment of the canon, and inspiration from philosophical logic.
Thirteen up-and-coming researchers in the philosophy of mathematics have been invited to write on what they take to be the right philosophical account of mathematics, examining along the way where they think the philosophy of mathematics is and ought to be going. A rich and diverse picture emerges. Some broader tendencies can nevertheless be detected: there is increasing attention to the practice, language and psychology of mathematics, a move to reassess the orthodoxy, as well as inspiration from philosophical logic.

  • Book Description :
This text, part of the "Springer Classics of Mathematics" series, examines perturbation theory for linear operators.

Review

"The monograph by T. Kato is an excellent textbook in the theory of linear operators in Banach and Hilbert spaces. It is a thoroughly worthwhile reference work both for graduate students in functional analysis as well as for researchers in perturbation, spectral, and scattering theory.
In chapters 1, 3, 5 operators in finite-dimensional vector spaces, Banach spaces and Hilbert spaces are introduced. Stability and perturbation theory are studied in finite-dimensional spaces (chapter 2) and in Banach spaces (chapter 4). Sesquilinear forms in Hilbert spaces are considered in detail (chapter 6), analytic and asymptotic perturbation theory is described (chapter 7 and 8). The fundamentals of semigroup theory are given in chapter 9. The supplementary notes appearing in the second edition of the book gave mainly additional information concerning scattering theory described in chapter 10.
The first edition is now 30 years old. The revised edition is 20 years old. Nevertheless it is a standard textbook for the theory of linear operators. It is user-friendly in the sense that any sought after definitions, theorems or proofs may be easily located. In the last two decades much progress has been made in understanding some of the topics dealt with in the book, for instance in semigroup and scattering theory. However the book has such a high didactical and scientific standard that I can recomment it for any mathematician or physicist interested in this field.---Zentralblatt MATH, 836.

  • Book Description :
Several Complex Variables and the Geometry of Real Hypersurfaces covers a wide range of information from basic facts about holomorphic functions of several complex variables through deep results such as subelliptic estimates for the ? Neumann problem on pseudoconvex domains with a real analytic boundary. The book focuses on describing the geometry of a real hypersurface in a complex vector space by understanding its relationship with ambient complex analytic varieties. You will learn how to decide whether a real hypersurface contains complex varieties, how closely such varieties can contact the hypersurface, and why it's important. The book concludes with two sets of problems: routine problems and difficult problems (many of which are unsolved). Principal prerequisites for using this book include a thorough understanding of advanced calculus and standard knowledge of complex analysis in one variable. Several Complex Variables and the Geometry of Real Hypersurfaces will be a useful text for advanced graduate students and professionals working in complex analysis.

This book is devoted to a comparitively new branch of functional analysis, viz. the theory of interpolation spaces. It provides a systematic and comprehensible description of many fundamental results obtained in the initial stages of the development of this theory, starting from 1976. We shall confine the description to areas where the investigations have reached a certain level of perfection (properties of interpolation functors, general theory of perfection of the real method and some of its applications). The number I in the title of the book is connected with these restrictions. The time of appearance of Vol. II (and the list of its authors) will depend on the pace of research into the unexplored regions of the theory..

  • Book Description :
Many people do not understand the basic concepts of probability, as evidenced by the proliferation of those participating in lotteries, horse racing, and gambling at casinos. But probability and statistics are becoming increasingly important in today’s society. As the basic ideas are being taught in elementary schools through college, it’s important that everyone has a basic understanding of probability theory. Probability theory explains the happenings that occur due to chance. Although it is not possible to predict for certain the individual outcome of a chance process, it is possible to determine outcomes in the "long run," and to predict the probability that something will eventually occur. This book will present the basics of probability in a non-rigorous manner. Only an understanding of arithmetic and some basic algebra are necessary to learn these ideas. No high-powered mathematical notation or formal proofs will be used, rather the concepts will be developed from examples using coins, dice, cards, and other common probability devices.

From the Back Cover

DON'T ROLL THE DICE LEARNING PROBABILITY! Now anyone who ever flipped a coin, played cards, or placed a bet can grasp the principles that govern probability -- without formal training, unlimited time, or an Einstein IQ. In Probability Demystified, experienced math instructor Allan Bluman provides an illuminating and entertaining way to master chance, odds, and predictability.
With Probability Demystified, you learn the subject one simple step at a time -- at your own speed. This unique, self-teaching guide offers problems at the end of each chapter and section to pinpoint weaknesses, and a 60-question "final exam" to reinforce the entire book.
If you have basic math and a little algebra, you can master probability. This fast and entertaining self-teaching course makes it fun and easy to:
* Learn probability theory with examples using familiar items such as coins, cards, and dice
* Discover how actuaries predict the likelihood of events
* Play games of chance with deeper understanding
* Construct a solid foundation for statistics
* Be better prepared for standardized tests
* Take a "final exam" and grade it yourself!
Simple enough for beginners and students but always challenging, Probability Demystified is the most interesting self-teaching tool or brush-up you can find!

This second edition develops the foundations of finite group theory. For students already exposed to a first course in algebra, it serves as a text for a course on finite groups. For the reader with some mathematical sophistication but limited knowledge of finite group theory, the book supplies the basic background necessary to begin to read journal articles in the field. It also provides the specialist in finite group theory with a reference on the foundations of the subject. Unifying themes include the Classification Theorem and the classical linear groups. Lie theory appears in chapters on Coxeter groups, root systems, buildings, and Tits systems. This second edition has been considerably improved with a completely rewritten Chapter 15 considering the 2-Signalizer Functor Theorem, and the addition of an appendix containing solutions to exercises.

This book gives an introduction to deconvolution problems in nonparametric statistics, e.g. density estimation based on contaminated data, errors-in-variables regression, and image reconstruction. Some real-life applications are discussed while we mainly focus on methodology (description of the estimation procedures) and theory (minimax convergence rates with rigorous proofs and adaptive smoothing parameter selection). In general, we have tried to present the proofs in such manner that only a low level of previous knowledge is needed. An appendix chapter on further results of Fourier analysis is also provided.

This book is an excellent introductory book to graphical data analysis. If you are an advanced reader, this book is a good one to have lying around for reference (especially since it costs so little and does not take up much space). The book relies heavily on the use of S-PLUS, a grapical and statistical analysis program. One thing that this text lacks is quantity of examples. The text is also lacking in that there is a lot of material in simple paragraph format rather than broken down steps of procedures. However, the quality of the examples that are included is very high and they usually encompass theoretical concepts completely. With that said, this book covers a wide variety of methods of analysis ranging from simple histograms to advanced data transformation and also touches on a bit of probability.

  • Book Description :
Coalgebraic logic is an important research topic in the areas of concurrency theory, semantics, transition systems and modal logics. It provides a general approach to modeling systems, allowing us to apply important results from coalgebras, universal algebra and category theory in novel ways. Stochastic systems provide important tools for systems modeling, and recent work shows that categorical reasoning may lead to new insights, previously not available in a purely probabilistic setting.
This book combines coalgebraic reasoning, stochastic systems and logics. It provides an insight into the principles of coalgebraic logic from a categorical point of view, and applies these systems to interpretations of stochastic coalgebraic logics, which include well-known modal logics and continuous time branching logics. The author introduces stochastic systems together with their probabilistic and categorical foundations and gives a comprehensive discussion of the Giry monad as the underlying categorical construction, presenting many new, hitherto unpublished results. He discusses modal logics, introduces their probabilistic interpretations, and then proceeds to an analysis of Kripke models for coalgebraic logics.
The book will be of interest to researchers in theoretical computer science, logic and category theory..

Bose Algebras: The Complex and Real Wave Representations (Lecture Notes in Mathematics) by Torben T. Nielsen

  • Book Description :
The mathematics of Bose-Fock spaces is built on the notion of a commutative algebra and this algebraic structure makes the theory appealing both to mathematicians with no background in physics and to theorectical and mathematical physicists who will at once recognize that the familiar set-up does not obscure the direct relevance to theoretical physics. The well-known complex and real wave representations appear here as natural consequences of the basic mathematical structure - a mathematician familiar with category theory will regard these representations as functors. Operators generated by creations and annihilations in a given Bose algebra are shown to give rise to a new Bose algebra of operators yielding the Weyl calculus of pseudo-differential operators. The book will be useful to mathematicians interested in analysis in infinitely many dimensions or in the mathematics of quantum fields and to theoretical physicists who can profit from the use of an effective and rigrous Bose formalism
